The
Fisheries Department of Kerala, governed by the Minister for Fisheries,
is considered to be one of the most important productive and developmental
sectors of the state. About 3 percent of the economy is attributed
to Fisheries.

Resource
Potential
The
State of Kerala is situated on the West Coast of Peninsular India
– blessed with 590 km long coastline. The State has a geographical
area of 38,000 Sq.Km. The continental shelf is narrow & sprawls
over an area of about 40,000 Sq. Km. EEZ extends upto 200 nautical
miles.
The
marine resource potential of the State within the continental shelf
area is 7.5 lakh focus. The Inland Sector is endowed with
extensive inter connected brackish water lakes & estuaries with
a total area of 1,26,366 ha. 41 west flowing & 3 east flowing
rivers have a total length of 320 km & water spread area of
85000 ha. Reservoirs & minor irrigation tanks constitute 45725
ha. Tanks & Ponds have an area of 24310 ha.
Human
Resources
Fisherman
population is 11.36 lakh, which include 8.28 lakh in marine &
3.28 lakh in Inland sector. Active Fishermen is estimated as 2.3
lakh (1.8 marine & 0.5 lakh in inland sector) Fishermen settlement
areas spread over 222 fishing villages in marine sector & 113
villages in Inland Sector.
Agencies
A
number of agencies work under the department like Matsyafed, Matsya
Board, Agency for Development of Aquaculture, Fish Farmer's Development
Agency (FFDA), Brackish water Fish Farmer's Development Agency (BFFDA)
etc. for implementing various projects and schemes for the expansion
of fisheries in Kerala as well as for the welfare of the fisher
folk. |
